Our 2018 Buddha Hand (also known as Fo Shou or Xiang Yuan) is highly aromatic with floral, pear and stone fruit flavours and delicate toast and mineral notes. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy leaving a long-lasting sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar.

We have selected this Buddha's Hand as it demonstrates the impact of terroir on the aroma and flavour development of this tea that you can immediately identify as Wuyi Shan. This is not to be mistaken with Buddha's Hand that can also be produced in Yongchun, Fujian or Taiwan.

Despite not being a yan cha “cliff tea” the medium baking and mineral notes in our Buddha’s Hand take on a number of these familiar traits as well as it’s own unique style. This is a relative new tea to the Chen family tea offering and we are really enjoying it and thought we would share it with our customers.

It is named Buddha’s Hand due to the very large leaves of the Fo Shou cultivar used to create this tea.

Origin: Lian Hua Feng Peak, Wuyi Shan, Fujian province, China

Flavour profile: Velvety | Floral | Fruit

Processing highlights: Buddha’s Hand is one of a number of Wuyi oolong cultivars. Our tea maker refers to this tea as a Wuyi Pinzhong. These teas have been introduced to the region from other tea growing lands or created as a result of hybridisation in the 1990’s. This tea is traditionally roasted over charcoal 4 times resulting in a medium baking level.

Harvest: 05.08.2018

Cultivar: Fo Shou

Tea Master: Ms Chen

Wuyi Shan is a mountainous area that is naturally protected and provides favourable growing conditions. The region has relatively high humidity levels, high rainfall and fog is common.

Tea has been produced in Fujian province for well over 1,600 years. Fujian produces five different categories of tea, most of which originated in the province.

Elevation: 500m

Our Buddha’s Hand is a rich, clean tea that is both silky and creamy in the mouth. Flavours reminiscent of pear, stone fruit, spice and tobacco make this a decadent tea to drink. This liquor leaves a finish that is long lasting and sweet, like brown sugar.

This tea pairs particularly well with spicy and salty foods such as cold cuts, smoked fish and cheese. This tea would also be a great choice to end a meal paired with a single-origin dark chocolate.

Leaf appearance: Large long-leaf strip style

Aroma: Highly aromatic with a bouquet of tobacco, floral and spice notes.

Liquor colour: Rich amber
