Our sannen (3-year aged) bancha is produced from roasted tea stems that produce a delicious tea liquor reminiscent of toasted cereal grains and nuts that combine for a sweet finish.

Sannen bancha is reminiscent of Hojicha in terms of aroma and flavour but the long oxidation of the tea stems mellows the tea making it lighter and a very easy drinking tea at any time of day.

During 2018 I was honoured to visit and experience the hospitality of the Tarui Tea Garden, the producer of this tea. This small family operated organic tea producer is everything we dream of when thinking about the heart and beauty of pure leaf tea. That is why we are so pleased this year to share a very small amount of their tea with the Australian market.

Origin: Nearaicho, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

Flavour profile: SWEET | CEREAL | TOASTED NUTS

Processing highlights: The producer utilises autumn harvested bancha stems that are separated from their leaves and stored in the Tarui family warehouse for three years. They are then roasted to finish the tea and and impart a slightly roasted flavor.

Harvest: Autumn 2016

Cultivar: Yabukita

Tea Master: Mr Tarui

Our producers have been producing tea organically since 2003. They have much dedication and focus in soil condition utilising organic fertiliser and mineral stones from neighbouring villages.

Our 3-year aged roasted tea stems are light with a semi-sweet flavour reminiscent of roasted cereal grains and nuts. The fragrant liquor has subtle hints of straw and wood.

I first experienced this tea in a Japanese tea room in Tokyo where it was presented to me traditionally as a boiling tea in a copper kettle. Boiling teas are those that are prepared in a pot over a heat source and left to simmer for an extended period of time (5-10mins). Sannen Bancha is truly delightful and makes the perfect finish to any meal or as a partner to dessert.

Due to its mellow and soothing properties this is a wonderful tea to drink at anytime of the day.

Leaf appearance: Short lengths of thick broken tea stems

Aroma: Notes of toasted cereal grains and nuts

Liquor colour: Clear orange
