A lightly oxidised green tea produced in the style reminiscent of a green ‘oolong’. The golden liquor has a fresh bright floral aroma. The taste is smooth, vegetal with a late tartness reminiscent of lemon. The liquor is buttery with a lingering floral finish.

Mr Miyazaki has been farming naturally since 1983 despite being told that it was not possible his family persisted with organic farming. After drinking and enjoying oolong tea from abroad he wanted to see the result of using Japanese cultivars to produce this type of tea. He shares that despite his first batch of oolong being highly memorable it has been a long road and many years of ongoing processing to refine his recipe.    

I have been searching for a Japanese ‘style’ oolong to add to my collection since seeing and tasting a number of experimental style withered green teas in 2019. Seeing how Japanese cultivars can show more expressive floral notes made me fascinated by this style. Not to be compared with lightly oxidized oolongs for Taiwan or China I think this is a good representation of the modern tea styles that have me really excited about Japanese tea. A delicious tea that makes for an enjoyable brew.

Processing highlight: Subject to outdoor withering, minimal oxidation on bamboo racks, controlled pan frying, rolling and baking.

A relatively new and rare late budding cultivar registered in 1991. It is a cross between takachiho and F1-9-4-48 (Assam x Caucasus). It’s floral sweetness and creamy body provide a great base when utilising oolong making techniques.

Iyazaki is a warm climate as it is located in southern area in Japan, but Gokase is 600m high which is considered a high-altitude in Japan. The gap of temperature in day is significant and there is a limitation in the sunlight hours.  The tea garden is surrounded and protected by Cedar trees resulting in a limitation of sunlight hours.

Elevation: 620m

The golden liquor has a fresh bright floral aroma. The taste is smooth, with some herbaceous notes and a late citrus tartness. A persistent semi-sweet floral flavour and a buttery liquor.

Store in an airtight container away from light, heat and moisture.
