Arakai Estate’s Spring Flush Green ‘special reserve’ is something very special from the Estate’s 2018/19 harvest. This green tea is semi-sweet, clean and refreshing. It has a lovely rounded mouth feel with a floral bouquet and delicate vegetable notes.

Why is this tea classified as ‘special reserve’? It is an illustration or experiment relating to terroir as opposed to a new production technique. The tea was grown at the bottom of the block where the tea bushes are believed to have received a lot more water and nutrients. There was also an element of shading for these rows of bushes that produced beautiful dark green growth that grew at a faster rate (one week) ahead of the rest of the plantation. The tea maker, Brendon, advised us that as soon as it came out of the dryer he knew it was going to be superb.

We thought this tea was absolutely beautiful and it took us back to the first time we tasted Arakai Estate’s tea. It served as a reminded of why we love and advocate for this tea producers. Only 8kg (1.5 rows) of this special reserve tea has been produced and we have a small amount just for you!

Origin: Bellthorpe, QLD, Australia

Flavour profile: Semi-sweet | Floral | Zucchini

Processing highlights: Arakai Estate utilise a unique range of Chinese and Taiwanese processing techniques that result in a longer withering process, more commonly associated with the finishing of oolong teas. This is evidenced in the unfurling wet leaves that have beautiful shades of red and brown along the edges of the leaf.

The plucking standard is 1 bud and 2-3 leaves with the tea being processed by the ‘mighty’ bike harvester. We love the innovation that the tea producer has had here! A mechanical harvester has been fixed to the top of 2 bikes that is operated by one person and walked between the tea fields.

Harvest: Spring 2018/19

Cultivar: Around 80% of the Estate is Yabukita and Sayama Kaori with smaller quantities of Meriokyu, Yutakamidori, Fushin and a much smaller amount of Okumidori.

Tea Master: Brendon Collins

Arakai Estate is located in the beautiful Conondale Ranges in South-East Queensland. Bellthorpe has a mild, subtropical climate, with high rainfall and fertile, slightly acidic soil perfectly suited to growing the Japanese tea cultivars. Cooler temperatures are experienced overnight and during the winter.

Elevation: 500m – 600m

This exceptional green tea is complex and perfectly balanced. It delivers a flavour that is floral, slightly creamy with vegetable notes leaving a long-lasting sweetness in the mouth.

Arakai Estate’s 2018/19 Spring Flush Green ~ Special Reserve will pair with white meats, vegetables, salads and fish. It is also a good accompaniment to slightly salty foods. Try this tea with Japanese rice balls or avocado on toast with a sprinkling of feta.

Leaf appearance: Long, thin and twisted rolled leaf and bud with even green, brown and red colourings.

Aroma: An elegant floral bouquet, delicate vegetable and grass notes.

Liquor colour: Pale yellow
