A new addition to my collection of Japanese green teas that hero parts of the tea plant that could be considered by some to be by-product or lessor grade tea. It is the art of roasting karigane that we believe transforms this beautiful stemmy tea into a true delight!

Our Roasted Karigane is smooth and well-rounded produced from the stems and a small amount of first-flush sencha tea leaves. It produces a moreish umami flavour that has notes of marine and toast that can be enjoyed anytime of the day.

This is an economical introduction to Japanese green tea.

Origin: Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan

Processing highlights: Our Roasted Karigane is produced using a blend of stems and veins of Gyokuro and high-grade sencha that has been gently roasted to a low level. Our refiner has also blended a small amount of first-flush sencha to round out this tea.

Refiner: Kagoshima Seicha

This pure leaf tea is grown and harvested in the Kagoshima prefecture. This blended product of tea gardens across this region reveals the skill of the refiners to create well-balanced teas. Kagoshima is the second largest producer of tea across Japan.

A semi-sweet liquor that has a medium body and silky feel in the mouth. A well-balanced tea that has exhibits toast, nut, green vegetables and marine notes.

Roasted Karigane is a versatile tea for pairings. It has a good weight that making it pair nicely with seafood, rice, egg dishes, raw and lightly cooked vegetables.

Try this tea with a melon pan Japanese bread or a sticky ginger bread cake.

Leaf appearance: Vivid bright green to jade stems and a small quantity of broken needle-like green leaves

Aroma: Notes of kale and ocean air and a delicate toast aroma

Liquor colour: Clear light green- yellow

Brewing & Storage

Store in an airtight container away from light, heat and moisture.
